Tempis non fugit

This blog would have been named YAWN.com had it been available. First we are inundated with the likes of Republican Senators on the Judiciary Committee whose ignorance of Latina wisdom is underwhelming. Did these guys really get elected statewide or did they get appointed by the local, er, good ole boys club. Ask a question once and get no answer, shame on them, ask a question 20 times and get no response, shame on you.
So we are treated to hours upon hours of live naive Republican Senators who present an insatiable curiosity and amazing ability to look like boy scouts with hair gel(apologies to BSA). The Supreme Court nominee, who was probably bleeding internally from biting her lip during this circle jerk, remained calm and even apologetic for claiming a wise Latina would...well you know the rest. I'm sure her life's experience will have no bearing on her service on the highest court. I know mine wouldn't.
Then, the Supreme Court nomination gets sidelined by what? An African American professor allegedly conducting himself disorderly in front of his own house and getting arrested. Now, I can see the newsworthiness of this as a kind of "News of the Weird" but then the POTUS weighs in and all hell breaks loose. He called the cop's actions stupid. This? This knocks the appointment of the first Latina to the US Supreme Court off the front page of the newspapers? SLOW NEWS SUMMER.

Why couldn't we be inundated by investigations into the lying and dirty dealings of the Bush Administration and the Emperor of Evil Mr. Cheney for summer fare? Would it not have been more intriguing to find out the dollar amount Blackwater (or whatever its name is this week) was paid to abuse Arabs in their own country? I would have sat down with popcorn and a soda to watch Cheney testify before Congress that he did nothing wrong and that the WMDs grew legs and walked themselves to Syria. Congress would buy the story, wouldn't they? At least the hair gelled boy scouts would have.

So why don't we have any fun and entertaining news this summer. It almost makes me misty eyed for the Watergate Hearings.

Finally, today, the news seems to have gotten its focus back. Now that the presidential happy hour is behind us and the Sotomayor hearings are over, we can focuse on the Democrats deadlock in Congress over healthcare reform. This, while unfortunate, should give us some insights into how the Obama Administration deals with party unity and whether it can negotiate with its own, regardless of Republicans saying no to everything.
So, a slow summer just might be the time to give America what it needs; healthcare reform as a good shot in the arm.
